E M Schumacher (of "Small is Beautiful") published a catalogue of tools helpful in the Third World. He speak of intermediate technology. An example is a plow, wooden except for the point, the part going into the sod at very first and most prone to wear. A collar -- versus ox yoke -- was IMO part of Schumacher's plan. Another example I think would be a foot-operated pump for irrigation.
